As some parts of the country do not have suitable soil for wastewater treatment you may need to look into other types of systems.

Alternative systems may also be necessary if the ground water tables or surface water is too close to were your septic system would be located.

Some newer systems use technology to improve the process of treating wastewater and may need special care and maintenance. Some of the differing types of systems used could be sand, peat or plastic media instead of soil to encourage wastewater treatment. Other alternatives could use wetlands, lagoons, aerators or disinfection devices. Float switches, pumps and electrical or mechanical components are also used in alternative systems. However if you do have one of the types of systems you will also need to check it annually and give it the same care and maintenance as you would a standard type of septic system. Check with your local health agencies or installer for the proper care and maintenance required for your type of system.
