Aside from the basic causes of septic system failure such as excessive water flow, there are other physical aspects that can cause system failures.

The products you use every day in your household can cause damage to your septic system. Oil based paints, solvents and huge volumes of cleaners should never be flushed down the toilet or drains in your home. These materials can interfere with the normal treatment process of the wastewater.

If you have a spa or swimming pool it is very important that when draining it for service or cleaning you make sure to divert the water away from the drain field. Remember your septic system was not designed to handle that volume of water entering the system at one time. If you do need to drain your pool or spa make sure the water has cooled and then you can drain it into a part of your landscaping that is far from your drain field.

If you have or are planning to install a water purification system in your home you should check with a plumbing professional for alternative routing for freshwater treatment systems.

Whenever possible you should use alternative methods for processing your food waste. A garbage disposal can add considerable amounts of solid waste to your septic tank daily. By eliminating the use of the garbage disposal you will be reducing the amounts of solids and greases that enter your system and therefore, will be reducing the amount of times you need to pump out and clean your system.
