There are a couple of things that can cause failure of your septic system.

Poor maintenance ranks high on the list. A well cared for system should be able to provide you with many years of service.

Another cause of system failure is when too much water is entering the system at one time and causing overflow, backups and general health hazards.

If you are noticing a bad smell and surface water sitting in the drain field you definitely have a problem, unfortunately by the time you notice a visible sign the damage could already be done.

Again, conservation of your water is the best way to control excessive wastewater flow into the system. It is also imperative that you have the system inspected and pumped regularly to reduce your chances of system failure due to excessive water and sludge/scum in the system.

You may also experience problems with your septic system if it was installed in poor soil conditions. Septic tanks are also at risk if it is too difficult to get to them for service.
